Description: The Tamarisk Coalition (TC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration of riparian lands, is seeking to fill a Restoration Ecologist Position. TC works with partners throughout the West to advance riparian restoration activities and practices. Partners include federal and local public land managers and government agency personnel, private landowners, scientists, funders, regional and local nonprofit leaders, project managers, consultants, and others. The candidate will have demonstrated technical and practical environmental science skills and experience. Responsibilities may include vegetation monitoring coordination, interpreting scientific information to inform Tamarisk Coalition efforts (e.g. restoration design, staff), project management, and provide technical assistance and education to public and private land managers.
Location: The position is based in Grand Junction, CO.
Position and Salary: This position will be part-time, with an average of 20 hours per week. Salary is based on experience; range $27 - $30 per hour. Benefits for a part-time position include 403b7 retirement match and professional development stipend.
Primary Responsibilities: This position reports to the Program Director. This position is intended for a person with expertise and experience in riverside habitat restoration, ecology, and closely related environmental sciences. A “big picture” perspective on river system health and restoration in the West is necessary. Primary responsibilities are described below:
1. Guidance and advice for science and technical projects:
- Provide knowledge and expertise in an applicable restoration field of study (e.g. riparian ecology, ecosystems management, wetlands/riparian restoration (wildlife habitat), invasive weed management, geomorphology).
- Interpret scientific information in order to communicate with staff, board members, partners, and the public to inform program decisions and project components.
- Work with TC partners to understand their needs and provide technical support to improve their competency in restoration activities. Be able to teach best practices on subjects such as: noxious weed mapping and inventory, biological control monitoring; long-term vegetation and project success monitoring, revegetation techniques, planning, and other technical aspects of restoration.
- Be willing to lead and serve as project, and/or contract manager and have comfort with tasks including:
- Coordinating, drafting and/or editing technical papers such as grant applications, reports, and restoration planning documents.
- Technical grant administration and meeting grant report requirements.
- Budget development, and tracking in-kind services and project expenses.
- Maintain healthy working relationships with TC partners.
2. Guidance and support for TC staff on programs:
- Work with the Executive Director and Program Director to define and implement technical components of TC programs.
- Work with staff to implement TC programs.
- Support the staff in interactions with partners (scientists, land managers, and restoration experts), other constituents, funders, grantors, the general public, etc.
- Assist TC staff with the development, administration, and delivery of components of TC’s education program including:
- Collaborating with Restoration Coordinators on developing and implementing restoration best practices, techniques, information to provide to land managers/owners, and training and workshop. modules.
- Supporting Outreach Coordinator in the development of K-12 education program curriculum.
- Assisting Outreach Coordinator with content and agenda development for TC’s annual management/research conference.
- A master’s degree, preferably in an environmental science based discipline.
- Five years minimum experience in a technical/science related position, preferably with an environmental organization. Working experience should include: broad technical understanding of invasive weed management and ecosystem restoration, interaction with diverse organizations and on-the-ground practitioners.
- Demonstrated expertise in restoration and practical environmental science experience.
- Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Proficiency using ESRI Arc-GIS and experience using GIS in a restoration context.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to form relationships and work with diverse stakeholders including landowners, funders, state and federal agency personnel and other nonprofit staff.
Special Job Requirements:
- Dependable car and valid driver's license, registration, and insurance for travel throughout Colorado, and other western states
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed; ability to travel for extended periods (1 week or more)
- Physical ability to hike, backpack, and raft
- Public participation experience is desirable
